When and Where Can You See the Autumn Leaves in Okunikko?
This guide is for visitors who want to time a trip to Okunikko for the autumn leaves. It covers the color forecasts that the Nikko City Tourism Association published for the Okunikko spots, what the colors depend on, when the roads are busiest, and a few early morning sights the association suggests for avoiding crowds.
We used the association's autumn leaf status page, its 2026 traffic articles and the Ministry of the Environment's leaflet on the Oku-Nikko wetlands. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. The status page is updated through the season, and the dates we saw were between 13 and 29 September. Check the live page before you go, because the real colors can differ from a forecast.
How the association reports the colors
The association says Nikko City spans a wide range of altitudes, so leaves change in different places from early September to late November. Its page uses five marks: not yet, starting to color, good to see, peak, and fading or falling. It warns that the photos show a typical peak, not the current state, and that autumn is very crowded.
The Ministry of the Environment's leaflet gives a reason for the timing. It says the leaves of beech, oak and maple turn red and yellow when the temperature drops below 8 degrees Celsius at the end of autumn. Colors therefore arrive first on the cold high ground.
The Okunikko forecasts we read
These are the association's forecast windows for Okunikko spots, with the status on the date it last updated each entry.
- Odashirogahara, grass turning red: shown as at peak from 25 September, with a forecast of late September. This was updated on 28 September.
- Ryuzu Falls: shown as starting to color. A note dated 16 September said mountain cherry was turning, and some azaleas and maples had begun to change. The forecast is early to mid October.
- Lake Yunoko and Yudaki Falls: not yet, with a forecast of early to mid October.
- Senjogahara and Odashirogahara trees: not yet, with a forecast of mid to late October.
- Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls: not yet, with a forecast of mid October to early November.
- Iroha-zaka: not yet, with a forecast of mid October to early November.
Today is 4 October, so the grass at Odashirogahara may already be fading, and the marshland trees are likely still ahead of you. We cannot say for sure, because the status marks were last updated in September.
Other autumn dates the association gives
For the spots on the way, the association lists Yutaki Falls at its best from early to mid October. It describes it as one of the five famous Nikko waterfalls, along with Kegon, Kirifuri, Urami and Ryuzu. It puts Senjogahara's best time from late September to late October. For Konsei Pass, the best season is late October to mid November, with the road closed in winter.
When the roads are busy
The association says the peak of the Okunikko colors, from mid-October to early November, is also the time of the worst traffic. It says even weekdays at the peak can jam, and that the busiest hours are 09:00 to 15:00. Our guide to getting to Okunikko explains the roads, the buses and the detours.
Early morning sights the association suggests
- Morning mist at Senjogahara. The association says it is at its most beautiful in the early morning, when mist rises around sunrise at about 05:30. It says Senjogahara covers about 400 hectares, that it was a lake that became a marsh, and that its best season is usually late September to late October.
- The path of light on Lake Chuzenji. From late September to early October, the sunrise reflection can be seen from Senjugahama on the west shore. Private cars cannot reach it, so you walk or take the bus.
- Night lights. In autumn, Kegon Falls and nearby shrines are lit up. The association says night cruises and walks are sometimes held for a limited time.
It says that from June to November there are early buses on weekends and holidays for the mist. Check the operator for the current schedule.
What we could not verify, and therefore left out
- The actual colors on 4 October. Our latest entries are from September.
- Bus fares and times on the early services.
- Whether the night lights are on this year, and the dates of any night cruises.
